IBM iX was hired by a telecommunications company to improve the User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX) of their in-house created E-commerce engine. The platform was reportedly difficult to use and customers had been complaining about a frustrating user experience. IBM iX was selected without a Request for Proposal (RFP), instead, the company conducted long interviews with a shortlist of three consulting firms. IBM iX's team, composed of users, managers and consultants, led with a design thinking workshop and then immediately moved into agile execution. They developed user journey maps and insights, which were initially met with skepticism but eventually proved to reveal some gaps and good ideas. Feedback from the company suggests that this approach was more effective than the traditional RFP route. The project was successful in modernizing the E-commerce engine, significantly improving its UI and UX.
