Flexion Inc. worked with the nonprofit, American Trails, which aims to connect and transform communities through trails. The organization hired Flexion to execute a tactical refresh of the Recreational Trails Database, which hadn't been updated since 2021. Flexion was chosen due to its cost-value balance, alignment with the company's values and culture, and budget compatibility. A team of 2-5 people was deployed for this project.
The team at Flexion Inc. developed reusable Python scripts to process the 2022 and 2023 Transportation Alternatives datasets, acting as a stand-in for the unavailable Recreational Trails Program data. These scripts were designed to isolate trail-related projects, transform and standardize funding amounts, descriptions, and location information, and prepare the records for integration into the national database. The scripts navigated around inconsistent and incomplete geolocation formats and adapted the results to fit within the existing database schema.
To complement the automation efforts, Flexion Inc. and American Trails implemented a blend of domain-informed business rules, validation logic, built-in data quality checks, and human review. This combination ensured data accuracy. AI-assisted development tools like ChatGPT and Claude Code were also used to speed up the development and refinement of the automation routines. This project was a testament to Flexion Inc.'s ability to explore creative solutions while maximizing efficiency and accuracy.
