Navigation North collaborated with the Center for Learning and Digital Access, a department of the Smithsonian Institute, on a research and development project. The main focus was to enhance how teachers interacted with online content from the Smithsonian's vast digital resources. Navigation North were instrumental in working with teacher focus groups to understand their engagement with these resources. The company's technical team was able to swiftly implement suggestions from the teachers, a capability which set them apart from other web development or research teams. Navigation North have been managing regular updates to the user interface since the project's launch, and continue to work on feature development based on user feedback.

In addition to the initial project, Navigation North was also contracted for a separate grant-funded project aimed at understanding how students interact with the platform and its content. This project involved conducting literature reviews, examining ed-tech environmental scans, and leading in-class prototyping and workshopping with students in California. The company's approach, centered on understanding how teachers and classrooms engage in digital spaces, was the key factor in winning the contract. The official project was launched in the summer of 2016, and Navigation North has continued to work on enhancing the platform since then.
