The tax department had a custom back-office system built using COMAL, AlphaBASIC, and BASIC-PLUS, a SQL Server built using Visual Studio, and online functions built in HPE OpenVMS. Giant Software Limited was responsible for building features to effectively calculate taxpayers' liabilities through financial accounting systems. They also created custom tax packages to reduce the department's workload. Among the features developed was a system that enabled tax authorities to gather information about US clients with funds abroad from agents, finance companies, and other entities. The information would then be processed and sent back to the US government, the EU, and other countries. Giant Software Limited continues to maintain the department's existing systems and makes changes as new laws and requirements come in. They are also responsible for ongoing work with the department's Windows and online services. The collaboration, which started in 2000, is still ongoing.
