An innovative app can expand your existing business or be the foundation of your startup. In this article, you’ll learn what steps to take to put it on the market quickly but reasonably so as not to waste its potential.

When we were working on the projects for game-changing startups (such as Beerd, ASAP, Smartfix30), it was crucial to create the first version of an app quickly so they could show up on the market. 

In this article, we will guide you on how to make the process most efficient, from polishing your vision and finding the best developers to creating the first version of your product.

Step 1: Polish Your Vision

While polishing your vision, try to present details of your app and your business goal. Elaborate on your vision and how this vision can be made into a tangible product.


  • Does your idea solve a problem for a lot of people or a specified group?
  • What features and functionalities will your app need to work properly (e.g., registration, purchasing, social media sharing, access to a camera, push notifications)?
  • How will you make money on your app (e.g., paid app, premium version, subscription, ads)?

After you consider these questions, write these ideas out. For example, if your idea is for a mobile app for interior design, the app will likely solve a problem for those looking to redecorate their rooms or buy new furniture.

Idea: a mobile app for interior design. Problem: Many people want to redecorate their rooms or buy new furniture but not sure how it will look. Solution: an app that allows people to take photo of their room and see furniture in their room. Features: take a photo and use AR. Monetization: partner with furniture stores.

An interior design mobile app would allow people to take a photo of a room, choose furniture from a store, and then see what it would look like in their space. This type of app would need to have the ability to take a photo, use augmented reality, register users, and allow users to make a purchase. 

Monetizing this type of app could be achieved by partnering with furniture stores and selling the stores’ furniture within the app. 

The example presents all the most essential information you need to gather before turning to a software house.

Time spent on elaborating your vision is never wasted – developers will be able to understand your requirements easier. 

Step 2: Choose Your Platform

Choosing the best direction and platforms (e.g., iOS, Android, web) for your project will minimize the time devoted to the development process.

You’ll find perfect developers by looking at their previous work and asking the right questions.

Even the biggest innovation won’t win the market if the quality is poor. Your idea is unique, and it deserves a careful approach.

While choosing developers, try to find advisors: The right partner shares experience, knows what works, and helps you maximize the revenue. 

Look at their experience, check out some previous project and even talk to their past clients. 

Seek for excellent developers and also design talents. Don’t look at the price only – you want the best product, not necessarily the cheapest one.

  • Can I see some apps you’ve already created?
  • Do you understand my business model, target audience, goals?
  • How will we communicate during the project?
  • How will the process look like?
  • How fast can you scale up the team?
  • What about submitting my app to app stores, future updates, support and maintenance services?

Step 4: Create the First Version of Your App

The first version of your future dream product – an MVP – allows you to start building your brand before investing time and money to release the final product.

What is an MVP? Consider Henrik Kniberg’s drawing where he shows two approaches to creating a product: a car. 

When building a product, each iteration should solve the problem the final product will solve.

When building a product, each version should be functional. In the second photo, it goes from a skateboard to a scooter to a bike, to a motorcycle to a car – All of these iterations served a transportive function. 

A minimum viable product (MVP) is the version of your app that contains basic functionality and takes between 2-4 months to develop. 

Thanks to an MVP you get first users before investing in the full product. It lets you collect the feedback and gives you an answer to the question if you’re going in the right direction.

But how is it possible to build a functioning mobile app in 2-4 months? 

Comparing to the full product development, in the MVP development, you spend less time on design and develop only the most essential functionalities. Then, you collect feedback when you’re already present on the market. 

The stage of developing an MVP can also open your eyes to new growth and profit possibilities. 

For example, when we worked on an MVP for Smartfix30, a startup from France, our task was to create an app for a B2C market. 

The app’s goal was to digitize technical support. The whole idea was innovative, but while we were working on an MVP, we thought of a new idea: Why not start cooperating with big telecommunication brands in order to facilitate their clients’ technical support orders? 

We pivoted to implement this improved idea. Together, with our client, we turned this idea into a product, and Smartfix30 built a game-changing brand. 

An MVP allows you to enter the market quickly with minimum investment and risk, validate your idea or even come up with something more innovative. 

Step 5: Get Your Users’ Feedback and Plan Further Development

Your MVP’s users’ feedback will help you set further development direction.

After releasing an MVP, you and your development team should review the opinions of your initial users, find out what they do and don’t like, and determine whether your solution resolved their problem. 

Ask your initial users:

  • Does this situation solve your problem? Do you find it useful?
  • What you do and don’t like about the app?
  • What other features should we add to the app?

That is a fascinating part of the development process when you set up further direction. 

For example, last year we worked on a mobile app for ASAP, a startup from Poland that wanted to enter the market with a comfortable app for carriers and shippers. 

This MVP allowed us to learn what future app users need but also gain first clients. The initial users of our MVP were satisfied and turned into early brand advocates, being ready to receive the full version of the product.
